Introducing a new cultivar is an important moment for a grower or breeder. It is often preceded by years of crossing, selecting and growing. An independent assessment shows the qualities of such a new plant and what it adds to the existing assortment. This year, the Koninklijke Vereniging van Boskoopse Culturen (KVBC) will once again be present at GrootGroenPlus to independently assess new plants.

What does the KVBC do?

The KVBC is a nationwide association that has been focused on plant assortments for more than 160 years. We independently inspect new plants and compare cultivars within an assortment. The KVBC carries out several different types of assessments for this purpose.

During field inspections, new cultivars are monitored for two years. The assessors evaluate the plants several times a year for health, ornamental value, practical value and novelty value. Plants that perform well can receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold KVBC Award.

During star inspections, several cultivars within a single species or genus are assessed and compared with each other over a period of three years. Cultivars that score well are awarded one, two or three stars. The Euro Trials are the international version of these inspections: the same assortment is assessed in eight different European countries according to the same criteria.

In addition, the KVBC inspects new cultivars at trade fairs. During these novelty assessments, the assessment committee considers aspects including novelty value, overall impression and market potential. Successful entries receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold KVBC Medal.

KVBC and GrootGroenPlus 2026
On the first morning of GrootGroenPlus 2026, the KVBC inspectors will be present to inspect the submitted new varieties. The medals will be presented in the afternoon.
