The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) is in the process of hiring 4,000 tree nursery workers under the 'Green Army' programme. According to KFS, the Green Army is expected to contribute greatly to the target of growing 15 billion seedlings over the next 10 years, as set by President William Ruto.

"Green Army employees will assist in the national tree growing and ecosystem restoration programme by growing seedlings, planting trees, forestry work in forests and other forestry tasks," the government agency said in a press statement, adding that applications have been received for the positions.

KFS also outlined its plan to use technology by deploying drones in forest monitoring.
"This will provide data-driven decision-making and improved efficiency in tree planting and maintenance," it said.
In an effort to use technology, KFS has also participated in designing the Jaza Miti App, a mobile application for tracking the progress of tree planting across the country.
"The main objective of the Jaza Miti App is to provide information that enhances science-based smart greening activities by stakeholders in forest-based enterprises," KFS said.
Through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, KFS manages 300 tree nurseries and plans to set up 41 additional nurseries, mainly in ASAL districts.

The forestry body has called on Kenyans and other stakeholders to work together o grow more trees during the current rainy season, which is expected to last until January 2024.
