Weber Stekcultures has been in business for almost thirty years. In 2022, Raymond Weber and his partner Marleen Weber-Aasman took over the company. At GrootGroenPlus, both existing and new customers know where to find the company due to its wide assortment, licensed varieties, and quality. "You'll find virtually no weeds in our cuttings."

Two years ago, Marleen Weber-Aasman and Raymond Weber took over Weber Stekcultures in Erica from Raymond’s father, Koert Weber. "We are known for our wide range of products," says Weber-Aasman. "From roses to conifers and prunus varieties—combinations that not many cutting nurseries offer. We do this mainly because we enjoy working with different types of plants and trying out new things." Other species that Weber propagates include ilex, Hydrangea and Taxus. 

Weber Stekcultures has many licensed varieties, and license holders know where to find them. The company covers 3 hectares and doubled its greenhouse space to 8,200 square meters in 2018. The growers work with five permanent employees, plus around 20 students in the summer and on Saturdays, as well as temporary workers. About 60% of the cuttings stay in the Netherlands, the rest is distributed across Europe.

Weber-Aasman: "At GrootGroenPlus, we always showcase a selection that reflects our wide range. That’s what sets us apart." Weber adds, "Visitors to our stand are growers who are specifically looking for something. They already have an idea of what they want and need, and they come to us for that reason. We show that we’re open to new varieties when license holders request them."

Sustainable practices

Weber Stekcultures has heavily invested in sustainability. The nursery is MPS-certified and grows organically wherever possible, releasing natural predators weekly. "Sometimes you can’t avoid a little bit of spraying, but we try to minimise it," Weber explains. "It’s actually quite rare these days. In addition to that, we no longer discharge water; we are a so-called zero-emission company. The water board mandated this, but it also aligns with our own ambitions. After taking over the business, we replaced the old floors with lava floors at both locations, and all the water we use is collected and reused." The company is also equipped with solar panels.

For the most part, the growers provide themselves with cutting material from their own mother plants. Weber-Aasman adds, "We often hear from customers that everything looks so neat and tidy at our nursery. That’s important to us. There are virtually no weeds among the cuttings, and the nursery and grounds are also clean and weed-free. We strive for that quality in all aspects of our business, and it pays off in producing high-quality cuttings."
