OptiPlug paper pots ensure a strong start and faster regrowth

More and more growers are discovering the advantages of OptiPlug’s paperpots. These biodegradable pots promote even root development, faster regrowth and reduced losses after transplanting. At Powerplantz in Wernhout, the results are clear. ‘Roots grow straight through the paper wall without damage,’ says crop manager Jim Hendrikx. ‘That allows for quicker establishment.’

Made from FSC-certified paper, the pots are fully compostable and provide a sustainable alternative to plastic trays or plugs. ‘The paper ensures a natural air and moisture balance,’ explains Rico Scheffers of OptiPlug. ‘Roots remain active but aren’t damaged during transplanting. That makes the system ideal for both cuttings and seedlings in tree nurseries, perennial production and ornamental horticulture.’

Powerplantz now uses the paperpots on a large scale across several crops. ‘We’ve seen much faster regrowth,’ says Hendrikx. ‘Plants recover better after potting or transplanting. Water balance is more stable too, so we see fewer fluctuations in growth and colour. It also fits perfectly with our sustainability goals, as the paperpots completely degrade in the soil.’

Another benefit is labour efficiency. Because the paperpots can be filled and processed automatically, they integrate easily with existing machinery. ‘The paper sleeve provides just enough strength for mechanical handling,’ says Scheffers. ‘That makes the transition simple – growers barely need to adjust their process.’

OptiPlug supports growers in testing and implementing the system. ‘We advise on the right substrate, irrigation and pot size,’ says Scheffers. ‘Each crop is different, but the principle is always the same: healthy roots are the foundation of a strong plant.’

According to Hendrikx, that difference is clearly visible. ‘We see more compact root balls and less stress after transplanting. Combined with a good substrate and even watering, this is definitely a system for the future.’

In addition to paperpots, OptiPlug also produces various plugs and growing substrates. ‘Our goal is to help growers raise healthy, efficient crops,’ concludes Scheffers. ‘The paperpot is a great example of that: sustainable, practical and proven effective.’
