Treeport Zundert: learning together to innovate towards 2040

The tree nursery sector is undergoing major changes – but within that change lies the strength of collaboration. That’s the conviction of David Bömer, director of Treeport Zundert. ‘Our sector has a strong foundation, but to remain future-proof we must keep learning, sharing and innovating.’
Treeport Zundert is much more than an interest group. It’s a cooperative that brings together growers, schools, governments and suppliers to foster knowledge, innovation and promotion of the nursery industry. ‘We connect the parties that need each other to move forward,’ says Bömer. ‘We do that through concrete projects – and by focusing on the people who make the work possible, from students to entrepreneurs.’
Education and workforce development are key priorities. The cooperative is working on a continuous learning pathway for horticulture and nursery education. ‘We call it PR-sonnel,’ Bömer smiles. ‘It’s about well-trained people who enjoy working in green. That’s why we organise internships, practical days and meetings between schools and businesses. With the new generation, we’re shaping the sector’s future together.’
Treeport Zundert is also involved in several projects addressing social and environmental challenges. Projects such as **BodemUP Brabant** focus on improving soil structure and biodiversity. **Water in Balance** explores how growers can optimise water use, and research on **biodiversity in container fields** is conducted in collaboration with research institutes. ‘We want to show that growers are part of the solution,’ says Bömer. ‘Not part of the problem.’
This message also resonates at **GrootGroenPlus**, where Treeport Zundert has a strong presence each year. ‘The fair is a meeting place where knowledge, trade and innovation come together,’ Bömer explains. ‘It’s inspiring to see members supporting one another and proudly showing their achievements. That collective pride helps strengthen the image of our sector.’
The future of Treeport Zundert is rooted in collaboration, knowledge and pride. ‘Step by step, we’re building a strong and vital sector ready for 2040,’ Bömer concludes. ‘A sector that takes responsibility, innovates and gives young people opportunities. Together with our members and partners, we show that the tree nursery industry has a bright future – precisely because we keep learning and innovating.’
