MPS accelerates footprinting in ornamental horticulture through collaboration with Rabobank

MPS's HortiFootprint Calculator enables growers to gain insight into their environmental impact. This insight provides direction for sustainability plans. To accelerate sustainability in the Dutch floriculture sector, Rabobank will introduce a voucher scheme on 1 December 2025 that will reimburse business customers in greenhouse floriculture for part of the costs of a footprint calculation. By redeeming this voucher at Rabobank and getting started with the HortiFootprint Calculator, growers will be prepared for the increasing demand for transparency in the chain.
The horticultural sector faces major sustainability challenges. Trade, retail and chain partnersare increasingly demanding substantiated sustainability information, including a Life Cycle Analysis(LCA). This is the life cycle analysis that shows the full environmental impact of a product. Many ornamental growers find it difficult to carry out this calculation, while reliable emissions data is becoming increasingly important in order to be able to deliver. That is why Rabobank, in collaboration with MPS, is offering a targeted solution: a one-off voucher worth €1,000 for Rabobank business customers with a company in the ornamental plant sector. The voucher reimburses part of the costs of performing a footprint calculation using the HortiFootprint Calculator from MPS and LetsGrow.com. This gives floriculturists easy access to insight and concrete tools for further sustainability.
Basis for future-proof floriculture
Jos Heubers, product manager HortiFootprint Calculator at MPS, says that footprinting is more than a future obligation. ‘The HortiFootprint Calculator shows the impact of a product on sixteen environmental indicators in eight life stages. From CO₂ emissions to toxicity and from raw material use to packaging. For growers, insight forms the basis for sustainability, communication in the chain and compliance with future legislation and regulations.’
Much of the necessary data is already recorded by growers for the MPS-ABC certification scheme, making the entire footprint calculation quick and easy. Thanks to the LCA calculation by MPS and the link to the LetsGrow.com dashboard, entrepreneurs can gain insight into their environmental impact within a fewminutes. Heubers on this insight: ‘It's data that really delivers: insight into targeted opportunities for improvement, a comparison with colleagues and a basis for substantiating sustainability claims. It helps the floriculture sector to meet today's demand and be prepared for tomorrow's requirements. Footprinting makes sustainability concrete, measurable and discussable.’
Insight becomes a necessity
Pressure on the sector is increasing due to factors such as CSRD legislation, initiatives such as SBTi and rising energy costs. Rabobank therefore sees footprinting as a logical step. ‘Without insight , there is no direction, and without direction, there is no acceleration,’ says Arne Bac, sector manager at Rabobank. ‘With this voucher scheme, floriculturists can strengthen their position and take the next step in future-proof entrepreneurship.’
How the voucher scheme works
The voucher scheme is available to Rabobank business customers in the floriculture sector. After registering with their Rabobank account manager, growers receive a voucher that can be submitted to MPS. The entrepreneur and MPS then go through the process of data collection, calculation and insight together. Both the grower and Rabobank have access to the results.
