Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropunicea’ responds exceptionally well to pruning and develops into a dense hedge. Its dry leaves often remain attached throughout winter. A red beech hedge therefore continues to provide shelter, structure and privacy outside the growing season.

The plant is also suitable for landscape schemes, estates and larger gardens. When allowed to grow freely, it eventually develops into an impressive tree with a broad crown. Red beech can therefore be used both as a functional hedging plant and as a striking specimen tree.

Lasting colour and value
The young foliage emerges red in spring and gradually deepens to dark red or purplish brown. In autumn, the leaves take on warm copper-brown shades. The dark foliage creates a particularly powerful contrast when combined with green planting.

Red beech performs best in fertile, well-drained soil that retains sufficient moisture. It is suitable for full sun or partial shade, but prolonged waterlogging and severe soil compaction should be avoided.
